Just purchased this 1977 / 78 Starcraft deep aluminum utility. It's 16' to 16' 3" long with a beam of about 5' 4" and I'm going to guess weighs about 260 lbs. The cut out transom is 17 inches high at center.

Two questions:

What model is this boat?

Will a 25 hp outboard be sufficient? I'm thinking of putting on a new Suzuki 25. This should be plenty if just I am in boat I would think. But will it be enough (to plane) with a total of 550 - 650 pounds of people and stuff in boat?

25 should get it up on plane easily, even with 2 people, probably even 3. My Starcraft is a 14, but it is a lot heavier with a full floor, lockers, livewell and such. My 14 has a 25 and it moves close to 30mph with just me. Add another person and it planes easily but drops to about 23mph. A third person drops speeds to around 17 but it still planes. This is my boat for reference:

I see some general info, albeit some conflicts, for vintage Starcrafts of that year. I found this data from a mid-70s catalog:

Length – 16’2”
Beam – 65”
Weight – 236 pounds
Transom Height – 20”
Transom Width – 54”
Max HP – 35
Capacity/Passengers – 1300 pounds

But then iBoats had what is shown in the picture.

Thanks very much guys.

I really do not want to go over 25 hp if I can help it. This new Suzuki DF25A is pretty light at 136 lbs (manual, short shaft) and I'd rather not hang more weight on the back. I'm also going to keep boat pretty light most of the time and most of the time I'll be alone in boat.
