I know that this is tin boat but I am hoping that some of y'alls expertise will help me out.
I have a 12 foot wood jon boat that my grandaddy built in the '60's. I used it a lot when I was younger but it has been sitting up for years and has some rotten spots in it now.
My question is what kind of wood should I look for to try and rebuild it? It looks like its maybe 1/2" or so plywood but I don't know if there is a certain kind to look for or if just run of the mill Lowes/Home Depot plywood would be enough.

Try this site.... it has plans and everything on how to build yourself a wooden Jon boat. What glues, wood and varnishes to use.
I have a wooden 12ft too, no a Jon though. Flat bottom with v-bow.

Yes, photos of your project would be interesting.

in the boating world - the terms you use will result
in different answers . . . . such as when you say -
Rebuild, Restore, Repair, Fix-it-up to float, etc etc etc.

I guess it would be best if you can identify what is there now.
Most likely he used different kinds of wood in different areas.
Marine grade plywood can be found, but a bit pricey. But worth it.
Exterior grade pine plywood will work in your case if well preserved.
After all, all you will be doing is puttering around in it, not going to a boat show.
Homemade boats are often constructed with whatever materials
the builder had available. Resorcinol Glue has been replaced with
epoxy and other marine adhesives. Your Choice of what to use.
Brass and bronze wood screws are still available. (as well as stainless).
Learn to make "Dutchman" and "Scarf Joint" repairs on scrap wood.
In my world, if the boat is to be painted, I use a lot of fiberglass, epoxy and fillers.
Photos of your concerns will help the gallery help you !!

This is the "dark side" that I disappear into once in awhile

what port do you hail from ???

.

During my youth, I rode in many home built wooden boats. All of them were built with plywood and some solid lumber strips (approx 1x3's in most cases) that I think were cypress. They didn't have "pressure treated lumber" back then but they had plenty of tar and they weren't bashful about using it. Although in most cases, it really didn't take much. I'm not sure what they treated the inside and larger areas with to keep it from rotting though.

And I agree with the others, pics of your project would be nice to see.

Thanks for all the responses. Im from South Carolina and I plan to start working on it when it gets to cold for me fish comfortably. I will definitely get pictures as I go and share them. I love this site and would have never thought about taking pictures of projects like y'all have. It really makes me wish i would have done it while working on my aluminum jon boat too.

Not sure how bad the rot is but it seems like the effort to repair it would be close to the effort to build one. I built a canoe using the stich and glue method and it was a piece of cake.
