 Sorry guys. I'm starting my first paint job on my little jon tomorrow and I have a dumb question; bear with me. Do I need to sand my boat even though its unpainted and bare aluminum or can I simply wash it up and go directly to the etch/primer stage?

I think as long as it is free of any dirt or oils you can just put it on bare metal.

He makes no mention of scuffing the bare aluminum. :-k

I think if you use etching primer, you'll be ok. The only problem with the bare aluminum is the oxidation that happens almost immediately after sanding. I think if you give it a good scrub and rinse and then prime it immediately, it'll be fine.
