Greetings, I’m making a couple custom compartments, and wondering how to butt the carpet up against the hinge join so it looks professional like the other compartments on my boat.

Image on the left shows current status, where I have the hinge and the carpet. Image on the right shows what I’m hoping it will look like when I’m finished.

Thanks for helping me look good!

well - you could look at the other hinges that you say are what you want
and see what kind of hinge it has and how it is fastened. Then do the same.

two ways you can go - - - -
apply the flat piano hinge to the floor and carpet over the flanges.

- or - use an "offset" piano hinge like several members here have used.

and some degree of "craftsmanship" is involved as well as quality materials to make any project look good.

If you don't want to change out your hinges to the more common version that Johnny showed, You could probably modify a Z bar to line up with the holes in the piano hinge. Watch the video to get an idea how it's done in a doorway:

I have the following aluminum Z bar sources bookmarked - might need to navigate around in each to find the size you're looking for

those look to be pretty stiff extrusions... this is the stuff carpet guys use:

It usually has little teeth punched in it to grab the carpet... I don't see why you couldn't just drill this to match the holes in the piano hinge and screw it down together with the hinge.

I would think the carpet is installed prior to the hinge being installed. Then the hinge is installed with the carpet between the hinge and deck or hatch. No?
