Hello all,

So this year I have had a couple shots at fishing caught a few nice pike and a few nice panfish. Well...I noticed a little leaking around a rivet or two , and a seam. Last Saturday was just a beautiful day sunny and a high of 80. So I pulled the boat out and ran it over to a friends place with some room to work. I pulled all the seats...side note this gave me a chance to tighten my boat seats and put in some new foam lol. I scrubbed , washed , and rinsed the boat . I had what I thought was a great idea ... I grabbed my friends new leaf blower and used it around all the ribs and seams. I would like to think I had cleaned the boat out pretty well. I was wrong so very wrong the leaf blower however corrected that problem for me. Just an amazing amount of dirt came out. Washed it again and began the process of really getting it dry again. I sanded and wire wheeled every rivet and seam in the interior of the boat. I took a heat gun and went down every rivet to hopefully drive out any water left. I Applied Flex Seal Liquid to all seams and rivets. Here is where i start to question myself lol. I really have had no practical experience with this product and hold no allegiance to it. I will expect people to say that any number of other products would have done a better job... lol anyway It cured very well and looks to have sealed all rivets. I have now applied one coat of aluminum primer and will probably apply one more before I paint. Well that would be the end, but I noticed the motor mounting board was actually rotting. I was able to almost pull it by hand in the end i needed a pair of nips for the rivets and shop vac for all the wood mess on my new primer. lol Now of course I need a new 1 1/2 " thick 4" x 46" board or as it apparently was 2 3/4" plywood board pieces nailed together :) perhaps marine grade not sure.

I will paint the inside and then put some water in it. I think in the end it will be leak free ,but as i mentioned i have some doubts on the Flex Seal. Regardless at some point down the road removing it will be a nightmare.

I need a new (aluminum transom cap)

I am curious are there members who do this sort of aluminum work? Please any thoughts on where to purchase this item or leads on members with skills would be greatly appreciated.

Local shop is bending me a piece should be ready tomorrow. I believe he quoted me 25.00 so i am a happy guy.

what size motor are you going to use on your boat ?
If your transom is actually that small, could you just
get a Douglas Fir 2x6 and make that work?
of course, it would have to be waterproofed but will
last you a few years. Do not use pressure treated wood that touches aluminum.
is there anything that prevents you from have a transom panel
wider than the 4" ??

my personal vote was a "NO" on the flex seal . . . . . .
simply for the fact that I have had to remove a bunch of it
with a torch..... not an easy task.

.

I got this boat for $200 with a working trailer. I love this old boat it's only a few years older than I am. I Have been looking for a nice gas motor for a while now. came close a few months ago but sometimes craigslist doesn't work out . The original metal tag says max motor size of 10h. I currently have a minnkota endura max 55 36" short shaft. Makes that little 12' sail lol. I was hoping to replace the old plywood with marine plywood for really no reason other than that is what was there before. So yes after i get my cap back from the metal shop a piece of douglas fir would be fine. The picture i posted on top i believe shows i have at least 2 more inches of room so a 2x6 looks right.

Well I got the new metal piece from the fabricators. I went to the lumber yard and got a 2"x6"x8' of douglas fir. I also put one coat of paint on it with one left to go depending on weather. It's really coming along. I spent a few minutes cutting a plate to mount to the bow for my scott anchor mount when i get it done i will post a picture. If all goes well tomorrow will end with another coat of paint. I also have to paint the seats. I wish i could build a casting deck on this boat i just don't think it would be stable.

to be continued...
:)

nice work Jimmy !!

but - just a short note on painting bare wood..........
whether it be varnish or oil based paint, the application process is the same.
First coat - dilute 50/50 with pure turpentine or mineral spirits, let that dry at least 48 hours.
Second coat - dilute 25% with the same solvent - pay particular attention to the end grain.
Third coat - dilute 10% with the same solvent
top it off with at least 2 coats of your finish and you will have a very durable wood product.
and this is not a "one time deal"..... the top coat must be replenished every couple of seasons.

keep up the good work !!

Yesterday I did a few more things ... painted seats etc. I found a nice piece of carpet at home depot i plan on installing it when the temperature goes up a bit. Cold and rainy today and tomorrow.

I took the Aqua swan out for a fishing trip today. Caught a couple large mouth bass few Sunfish few bluegill. Not a drop of water no leak whatsoever. And so I can say that Flex Seal liquid worked very well. I don't know how long it will stay good and I know for sure that if I ever want to remove it it will be an extreme pain in the butt. However for now my boat is very dry.

I attached a steel plate for a large magnet it has a great adjustable neck and a flat plastic mounting plate at the other end lots of holes to mount nearly anything to it. I think i will put my fish finder on it. Really excited about the plate i fabricated for the bow scotty anchor. Installed it and i have to say it is rock solid !
