One of my buddies has a 17' Tracker that is set up with factory casting decks. Mounted on the front deck there is a twist lock eyelet/collet that his dock line runs through, and I'm having a lot of trouble finding out what it's called.

If you wanted to tie off, all you had to do was pull out as much rope as you need, turn the collet clockwise to tighten(which locks the rope in the eyelet), and hook the rope. All the rope stays coiled under the deck when not in use and out of the way.

I'm not sure if it was factory or an add on, but I would sure like to put one on my boat.

A rope jammer ? Sailboat guys spend a lot of money for them....

It's not a rope jammer.

The best way that I can describe it is that it's similar to a drill chuck/collet. The rope goes through the hole (which is in the deck), when you have the length you need, you tighten the collet and it squeezes the rope in place.

I'm going over there in a while, will try to get a picture.

Looks neat and I am sure that your friend's unit works well.

However, the more hidden and concealed that things are, the more I worry about them somehow malfunctioning just when I need them.

Some things, like cleats, have been around for a thousand or so years. They are still around because they work the way they are supposed to and rarely fail.

Please keep us posted.

He's had his on the boat since it was almost new (it's a 93 model) and hasn't had a bit of trouble from it. Original rope and all.

For now I may just drill a hole in my deck, run my rope through it and tie a carabineer on the end, and leave the rope coiled under the deck. Just trying to avoid having to dig around for the rope, pull it all out, tie it to the cleat on my boat, then tie it to the anchor or dock, and stow it all away when done.

I like the idea, it would be very practical. If you could find a way to mount it so that it would be easy to get to if you needed, why not. I wouldn't pay $70 for one though... I bet you could make your own out of a retractable dog leash...

Kayak guys been using this method for a while now. Here's one way to do it. Clothes line retractors also work.

Around the 1 minute mark.
