Wonder if there's a good boat seat for people with bad backs. The wrap around plastic seats they sell at Walmart are okay but the cushion type they sell are like sitting on a waffle. Maybe the height of a seat makes a difference too. I've had a herniated disc for about 10 years.

I used two tractor suspension seats in my old boat and they were excellent. Catch them on sale or come get one of mine near Phoenix. I saved them to use in my new boat but built a leaning post instead. By far the best boat seat I ever used.

Cheap enough to try. I've used them on kayak seats and they helped a lot.

Boat seats are terrible, tiny, and expensive... The best chair for a bad back is a nice big office chair with mesh and adjustable back support.

But of course an office chair doesn't fit on boat seat hardware. The only pedestal base that does work is this one from an inflatable boat manufacturer ... Aquos...

If you buy that base and mount it in the boat, you will be able to drop any office chair gas post into it... There's nothing better than a nice big office chair with a mesh back to fish from... They're cheap and easy to replace... The spider on the bottom of a chair like this will pop right off, and the post will fit inside the base of that pedestal above...

All office chairs follow the standard BIFMA format for these connections... so any chair will work...

Hmm. I may try to add arms rests to the different ones I have now and see if it helps. Most of the expensive seats seem to have them.

There are two things in this post I'm finishing up, seats and a leaning post.

The Tempress quick release swivel seat like in my drift row boat are great, but not cheap. They come without padding, add a firm cushion they offer. Hyde and Clackacraft offer a high back rower's seat that isn't over padded. Some of the raft frame folks have them too. The low back is too low for me.

Second stumpalump, got a picture of your leaning post?

I was going to suggest Tempress. My back isn't great and I bought a pair of their high-back seats, and love them. I still can't fish all day though. Usually can do half day as long as I've got something to eat and after half, my back isn't hurting. I did do 9 hours this past Monday though and didn't hurt one bit, until tuesday when I got up, and it wasn't unbearable.

One of my many old boats had a home-made deck, 1542 Duracraft with 3/4 plywood deck on the front, and on the wood was mounted...a lazy boy recliner. Most comfortable boat seat I've ever set in.

Tempress Navistyle.

They are the ultimate. I have broken my back twice, in two places, so I know a thing or two about back pain.

These have a snap on seat and back "cushion." It's firm and doesn't bunch, snap it off and wash. Mine have 10+ years plus and show no wear. Check out the quick disconnect plate, fits standard holes for standard base and pedestal. I use it to move seating to different positions when a third person is along. Mounted a Hyde full seat box as an extended front deck, so the seat will move across the box rails to any position, handy.

I'm sure you could find these standard offer, not just from Hyde. Check out their rower's seats too.

These really cradle the back. The swivel base can be used, the back is not hinged on this one, full coverage support.

It's thick aluminum angle bolted together. Made to fit two Stearns throwable devise seat cushions. I really like how it came out and performs. Aluminum gas tank like they sell at Jegs fits under it.

I feed the cushion straps through the holes and tie them underneath the seat pan. Easy removal and install to keep them out of the sun.

Easy fab with basic tools and is the exact size and shape I needed.

Stump- impressive job on the lean post. Why not put the allen heads around the top facing outward? Seems like you could (or your dog) get scraped up from rubbing against the nut and portion of the bolt sticking out. Stearn cushions are easier to replace than skin.

Might need them in Stainless, of course.

I hear you. I thought it would help the cushions when and since the bolts have never bothered me I left it. I and going to make a spacer to move the footrest back an inch. That will give me a little more calf clearance when standing. I think I'll swap those bolts around then so it looks cleaner when I do that. It's great to sit up like that. A windscreen with a piece of Home Depot Lexan and a frame built out of similar but thinner material is an idea I'm tossing around now.
