Good morning y’all,
A couple weeks ago I decided to jump into the “final” (probably not) project for my boat. I recently purchased a tohatsu 30 hp 4 stroke, the weight of the 4 stroke was beginning to bent the transom outward as well as twist it rearward. After drilling a core sample I found the wood totally shot. I knew I didn’t want to use wood to rebuild the transom, so I decided full aluminum.
After measuring, I realized three 1.5”x3” sections of aluminum rectangle tube would make the perfect transom! I ordered from our local metal shop, cut the sections based on the wood transom section I pulled out. Then had a buddy at work weld it up for me.
The knee brace in the boat was flimsy and not all that great, I ended up cutting it out and installed a heavier duty brace. The brace is a bit rigged but, I do plan on having the bottom mounting plate welded in place at a later date. I just wanted to get the boat back on the water asap. With all honesty it should hold perfectly fine.
I have to swap between my 9.9 and 30 jet for hp restricted lakes. So rather than perminitly building the transom up to 22” i decided to do similar to the photo i listed. I ordered 2x3x1/4” aluminum angle to build it up. Then i can remove the angle in order to install my short shaft 9.9.
