Replacing transom wood on 1992 Polar Kraft 1436

JUST picked this up today for my dad and the transom is rotten. How do you go about replacing the wood where it's wedged in under a top cap and side braces (see red arrows)? Inserted photo to show as best as I can, will get better photo later.polarkraft.jpg
 
Tough to tell exactly from the pic but sometimes you have to drill rivets and sometimes you have to get out a grinder with a zip disc.

The top cap is probably light gage aluminum that serves as trim as much as anything. The corner stiffeners are either riveted or screwed to the transom and sides. Remove the corners, pull off the cap, remove any screws/bolts into the transom, and it should pull out.
