What is this in my gas tank?

I forgot to mention that the gas gauge is a separate mechanism and is functioning properly so I don't think it is part of that.
The pickup tube is a plastic tube that is slash cut with a mesh screen inside; it doesn't appear to be related to that either.

To me, it appears to be part of a sending unit for the gas gauge. More than likely, it broke off in the tank for the original owner who replaced the sending unit without removing the old part from the tank.
