Let me see if I have this right, when beginning to rejuvenate a badly neglected aluminum boat.
First, remove what is removable, especially old wood and so forth.
Second, wash or pressure wash to get dirt, grime and any loose paint off.
Third, strip, wirebrush and/or sand to get off failed finishes and expose the bare aluminum. Doesn't need to be totally bare, if there are areas where original paint is still sound.
Fourth, before priming or repainting, check for corrosion, loose rivets, cracks and leaking seams and rebuck/replace bad rivets. Repair cracks, drilling both ends and applying patches and either 5200 or West G-Flex 6500. Do the same to leaking seams or leaking rivets.
Fifth, wipe everything down with vinegar or other acidic solution, then prime with self-etching primer and paint.
Sixth, replace rotted wood with new wood properly epoxied or otherwise finished to withstand moisture and UV damage.
Seventh, reinstall steering, controls motor and GET WET (assuming title and registration has been duly obtained).
