Is there one brand of tin boat that is the most iconic or has the most loyal following? I am looking to buy my first boat, and I have been surprised by the number of brands, and how it seems to be a model by model decision. Do you have an opnion about the best brand or tier 1 brands? Thanks!

Agree, Lund is the most widely available high quality brand that most know about

Starcraft would be pretty iconic. Depends if you’re talking v-hull or jon boat.

X2 on the regional favorites. Out here North River have become very popular larger high end boats. Klamath is common for open small utility to larger CC and windshield boats. In the good old days when larger tin boats were not that common, it was Valco for aluminum boats around here.

Lund
Probably the most sought after boat in regards to quality overall in North America.
Crestliner also comes to mind.

Up here in Canada Naden boats are very well built and your hard pressed to find one for sale for cheap.

In the Northwest the list looks somewhat different, North River, Wooldridge, Duckworth, Willie, Thunder Jet, Bolton, Hewes and many others.
Any of these welded boats can run circles around Lunds or Crestliners.
Some boats are popular because they are cheaply made. That does not make them iconic.

Alweld is a very good brand and has been around a while. If looking for a factory "taylor made" boat that you can order with just about anything you'd like this would be my first choice in a versatile tin boat. They're rugged and you can get just about anything you want. Sea Ark is another iconic brand that is built for the long haul but pricey.

princecraft, lowe and lund are the most popular utility car toppers around my area.lunds are overpriced here and are nowhere near as nice as a princecraft in mho. they look chunky and dumpy and not very sleek at all.i did alot of research and looked at every brand i could find when looking for my new boat and surprisingly, lund was way down the list for what you get for your money, width and storage wise,if you're talking trailered fishing boats.the drivers seat pedestal isn't even centered to the steering wheel.it's off to the left in the middle of the boat :shock:still see alot of the older ones around but i think they're pricing themselves out of the market and the more affordable ones are taking over, like lowe, legend and tracker and more and more g3's.thats just the lake boats.if you want to get into river jets, that's a whole other story.we do a crap ton of that around here and they're huge bizness in british columbia.we have dozens of world class salmon/steelhead rivers best accessed by a jet..

I guess it's mainly due to availability with a Bass pro within 20 miles of most everyone in Florida so, down here in So Flo, it's Tracker, nothing else comes close. That's not to say they are the best, but they are on the water disproportionately compared to everything else.

The nearest Lowe dealer to me is over 110 miles away, Alweld 60+ miles, Lund 141 miles. Add to that many have a skinny selection. I had to wait a few months for my Lowe 1040 to come in as they are not regularly stocked where Bass pro has several 10 footers in stock at all times. For many driving 200-300+ miles for a new boat is unpalatable.

i hear that.you would think with all the lakes in ontario you could find a competent service center close bye.same with me in bc.i ordered my boat in dec, and cancelled it in march when it still hadn't even been shipped.i ended up buying one in alberta, arranged shipping, and had it in my driveway in less than 2 weeks after canning the order, all over the phone.

One problem I found with the "most popular" name brand boats is that there was no customization of any kind available. You had to take the boat as it came. I needed a swing away tongue on the trailer and Bass Pro would not let me change that from the stock trailer unless I purchased a much larger boat.

These days, almost all boats are a good quality. As expensive as boats are, finding the one that fits the way you want to use it, trumps brand name every time.
