It's unlikely that boaters in regions much north of Florida will need this idea, but on my two tin boats I found this very useful.

In full summer sun the top of the sides of my tin boats got too hot to touch and kid's pool flotation noodles work wonders as not only a cool relatively secure (they grip the top really tightly on my Lowe and Topper) hand rest, they also provide the boat a bit of protection from scrapes. They're somewhat hard to find in black, and impossible in OD green but the five I got on Ebay in black are a welcome relief from hot summer hand rests.

At $18 shipped for 5 pieces (I only needed 4) they're pretty much cost inline with those bright pink, blue, yellow, and green ones sold at Walmart. To me they're an invaluable addition to the boat.

I use foam pipe insulators on the rail on my elevated deck. Same principle.
