Tracker Pro Deep V17 Side Rails

Post by tloc1000 » 04 Jan 2019, 16:57

I am going to rebuild the transom and decking on an early 90's Pro Deep V17. I would like to get rid of the carpeting on the side rails also. I'm not totally sure how to get the side rails off and would like to confirm before I tear something up.

It looks like I need to pop the rivets and take the inner rail off. How does the outer rail come off? Is the carpet just glued to the center piece?

Thanks!

Hi Tloc.

I think if it was me, I would leave the wide gunnels alone and try instead to just remove the carpet.

Don't you need to take the rails off to get all the carpet off? It looks like the carpet was laid then the rails put over the carpet.

Oh boy, that I don't know. Too bad (meaning more work) if you have to take it apart. You could very well be right, but I would sure try to remove remove the carpet before I started drilling out rivets. That is just the lazy side of me talking. Haha.

Looks like the inner trim piece on the rail is secured with pop rivets. I'd start by drilling those out.

Thanks for all the input.

I will be replacing the transom too, so I will first try to just remove the carpet, then pop a few rivets if needed.

I'll keep everyone posted.

First I would try to get the carpet off without removing anything. Yes it looks like the inside trim is on top of the carpet but, that doesn't mean that the carpet won't come off anyway. The carpet is probably glued on too so I would start in an area where it won't cause too much problems if it is necessary to remove the trim piece. If it looks like the carpet is stuck too good then go ahead and remove the trim piece, that really doesn't look hard to do.

So, i figured it out...

I started taking working on rebuilding the transom. You have to take the back side rails and inner rail off to get the transom out/in. While i was doing that, i took all the rails off.

Nice. Are you going to replace the carpet or do something else with the wide gunnels?

I plan on putting a nonslip flow coat on and putting the rails back on. I'm not a big fan of carpet.

That should be nice. My current boat has pretty wide gunnels. I like that feature a lot. Mine are painted and have a kind of coaming I guess you could call it along the outside edge so things won't just slide off into the water.

Anyway, I hope you continue share your progress.

More tear out. The previous owner put more plywood (non-coated or painted) over the original. The foam was waterlogged. It’s going to rain all weekend so I’m not sure if i will get more done.
