Getting ready to buy a new Lowe 1448M and I have a simple engine question. If I get a 9.9 that has EFI will I need to also have a battery onboard? At this point I really don't want a battery as I won't be trolling. I will go with a carb model if the EFI version needs a onboard battery but want to be sure. I know I will need to go with manual start and trim already as those items require power.

Looking at Honda's, Mercury, and Tohatsu 9.9/9.8 HP.

I knew absolutely nothing about this until I got curious from your question. Now my not so expert understanding is some brands have it and some don't. "It" being battery-less EFI. Quick search shows Tohatsu has it for their 9.8's, which I assume means Mercury has it too. I'm not sure Honda even has EFI on their 9.9 HP's.

honda and yamaha both are still using a carburetor. manual start models do not require a battery.
