Sorry for starting this in a new topic. A mod can delete the other one if they choose to do so.

I have been debating on when to change the transom wood or not, or wait until the summer and continue to fish this winter. I went out and took some pictures of the transom as it is now, and would like to know should I go ahead and change it, or will the set up I have now hold out for a while. Before I installed the aluminum, the wood was in bad shape, but the engine was solid and unable to be moved when lifting on it.

This is how I plated the transom with a 1/4" piece of aluminum and installed all the bolts that were in the transom before. The plate is a solid piece that runs from one cap to the other on the back of the boat.

Here is a side view of the aluminum plate:

This is where the CMC tilt/trim bolts through the transom. It has four large bolts that go through the transom. Also you can see the cap over the top of the wood that is made onto the back of the boat transom:

This is a brace that is on the inside of the transom were the tanks are setting under the back deck. It runs from the its location in the picture to the floor of the bolt. The two large bolts on each side of it are also were the CMC bolts up:

This is a cap on the passenger side of the bolt. You can see the aluminum plating as well as the transom factory wood behind that. As you can see the wood is in very bad shape.

Now, if I need to replace this wood, would I be correct in saying that the each of the caps on the back of boat would need to be removed. After that I could bend back the cap on top of the wood and take out all the other bolts and rivets running through it, and also take the brace loose and pull the wood out?

Again, sorry for running this topic again, but I wanted to add the pictures to show what I am looking at. Thanks

Thanks Waterwings.

I am going to change the wood ben2go, but do you think I need to change it now or will the aluminum plate be enough through the winter. When the boat is on the lake, I hardly ever go 1/2 throttle when moving from one place to the other. If it was you, would you run the boat this winter and wait on changing the wood, or go ahead and do it now?

Honestly,I would run it,if the motor feels solidly attached to the transom.I would replace it as soon as I could after winter has past.To much flexing of the aluminum will cause it to crack. The wood helps dampen the vibrations and flex.

Yeah, I plan on changing it, but with cold weather hitting, I am going to try and make it through the winter. Thanks for the info.

You're welcome. It is getting cold in your area.I am supposed to go to my girlfriend's family's house,in KY, for November.I know it's already getting cold up there. We started getting frost in my area,in SC, this week. Our days are finally in the 50's and 60's.30's and 40's at night.

Your weather is about the same as our weather right now. It is good though, because when I went to the lake today, there was three other boats on the whole farm. LOL

I don't think anyone ever covered this question. I have the same issue with my transom that I need to replace.

I'm curious- How do you like the CMC tilt/trim? I'm looking into putting one on my boat in the spring.
