about to replace my transom, and don't want to use paint. would like to know best clear sealant to use to seal the wood. using 3/4" oak plywood and will be staining it first. is polyurethane enough, or do i need some kind of heavy varnish. figured i'd need 4 or 5 coats of whatever i use. i've searched previous posts and did not find any details on varnish, most people seem to primer and paint.

poly will be enough... for appearance, you can stain it first, or you can get the stain with the poly already in it.

alright, thanks. i already have stain and poly from past projects, and was hoping i didn't have to buy anything different. all those little things sure do add up to take a bite out of the budget.

Poly is great - just make sure you do the edges with a few extra coats

The clear wood will look much better then paint
