This may sound lame and I may have answered my own question. Anyway, how are you going about determining what the difference should be in the size of a hatch opening in relation to the door. Do you figure what the compressed thickness of the carpet on the door and hatch edges would be then deduct that from the door size?

I left an 1/8" gap when I cut out my hatches and they fit really well. The hatches and the openings were carpeted with the Lowes outdoor carpet.

If you are unsure after taking about an 1/8 off, cut the carpet to fit the lid and temporarily attatch it with screws on the underside. It works best if you put the lid in upside down so that the screws are facing up so that you can just grab the screws and pull the lid back out (if you cut the hole square). that way if the door needs shaved you dont have all of the mess of the glue to contend with.
