Hey guys, new here, been reading up on all the boat mods, some really great info here. I have a older ?? maybe 70's evinrude 18 horsepower electric start. What size jon should I be looking for to put it on? I have a wife and 4yr old girl I need to take fishing. So I can't decide between an open layout or one with benches. I also want to use this for coastal redfishing, and would like one that I can perhaps put a poling platform on. I need a stable boat that would be a good match for my motor, any help appreciated. It doesn't have to be a new model, I am keeping my eye on craigslist for used.

A 14 foot vee might be nice. It is stable enough that you could deck it partially, and it would run reasonably well with an 18, while taking moderate chop better than a flat bottom.

I would stick to a good, wide, high sided 14' boat. I hunt & fish Mobile Bay and run an 18 Nissan on a 1440 mv jon. It is about as narrow as I would go.
Take a look at the Lowe 1448 mod-v jons https://www.loweboats.com/showroom/rivited-jon/lowe-jon/l1448m.php
as well as the G3s. https://www.g3boats.com/JonBoats/#welded

Given you will be in coastal waters, a semi-v might be a better choice (that is what I am switching to next year). I am leaning towards the Mirrocraft 3696 Deep Fisherman (16') Check out the mirrocraft 14' deep vs: https://www.mirrocraft.com/boats/simplyfishing/utilityv.php

or the Lowe:

Smokercraft has a nice 15': https://www.smokercraft.com/showroom/ShowModel.aspx?ModelID=763&SeriesID=78

I agree with the other's on a 14' V. But hey, bigger is better. That 18 will push around a 16' no problem. Had a 1957 on a 16 and it got me all over the mississippi river. With taking the wife and kid's out, I'd leave the benches in and keep the CG low for safety reason's. Hte to see the little one fall out! [-o<

If you are putting a poling platform on it you will want wider than 48". Lowe has the 1652 which would be better although slower. Been in both a V and Mod V in the Texas flats fishing for Redfish and I'll tell you what, I'd rather use a flat bottom or tunnel hull in the flats.
