Is there a consensus on the best type of framework to use when building a deck?

If aluminum is chosen are rivits the medium of choice to fasten the pieces together? I have never popped a rivit in my life, are there different types and if so what would be the best choice? Any particular size or would it depend on the size of frame material being used?

If one picks lumber are good old fashioned deck screws the best way to connect or would you need to use bolts?

Thanks

Don't have to use rivets. They are flush. You could use stainless steel bolts, washers and lock nuts. You need to drill shallow holes,on the bottom side of the deck to allow for the bolt heads. Most people use T nuts and bolts to hold down there decks.I have used bolts with wing nuts to make them quick and easy to remove.Only use stainless steel fasteners with aluminum.
