Well, my wife asked me what I'd like for my Christmas present, and I said how about a PhotoShop product!? So, we went down to Staples and we (I mean "Santa") bit the bullet and bought PhotoShop CS5 Extended (Student/Teacher Edition) for $199 + change (the non-student/teacher version runs around $699  ) . Went home and did all of the necessary stuff to register it as a teacher (copy of my ID badge and a recent pay stub to prove I am employed as a teacher), which they say takes 1-3 business days to approve. Of course I decided to do this on Saturday, but in the mean time am messing with the program on the 30 day trial period until I receive the approved number code from Adobe.

This is gonna take some serious time to learn this stuff! . The one thing that will be a big help is the PhotoShop CS5 book by Scott Kelby (great step-by-step procedures) that I [thankgoodness] won in the Louisville PhotoWalk 2010 event this past summer.

Wish me luck on this endeavor...........................I'm gonna need it! [-o<

Sounds like a fun gift.

I wish I would take the time to learn how to use something similar.

Good luck!

Great buy.....if you have any questions.....don't hesitate to hit me up. I am a "certified" professional PS user. (Never was clear as to what I'm certified for though)

You got a good gift there.

There a lot of info on the web this is a good place to start. https://tv.adobe.com/show/learn-photoshop-cs5/

Also get on youtube there a lot of info on there as well just about anything you need is on there I use it a lot https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=photoshop+cs5+tutorial&aq=3 you can even use the other CS4, 3,2 they are all about the same just that CS5 just has some newer stuff on it.

Thanks, Chris :) . I'll more than likely be hitting you up for some pointers on PS. Hell, I never even figured-out GIMP all the way, and only uised the basics. CS5 has some real advanced stuff  . I'm guessing you're a member of NAPP, and maybe a follower of Scott Kelby?

Thanks, Mark, I'll check those websites out for sure. Every little bit helps :)

I actually let my NAPP membership run out. About the only thing I used it for was to get the discounts when I bought new gear or software. I haven't had the need to buy gear for a few years though, so it's a stiff $100 that I get to keep in my pocket for now.

Scott Kelby does have some good info out there, but there are others too that offer great advice for free. Scott usually charges something for his good stuff. I'll look up a few and post some links tomorrow if I get time. (big crunch at work right now since I'm taking vacation next week until after the new year)

Remember....there's always more than one way to skin a cat and they are ALL subjective. Some ways are, however, a bit better :LOL2: . The images that I work on every day start out at around 70MB and go up sometimes to a GIG of info. It's not uncommon for me to use 15 or more layers...and I'm pretty stingy with my layering too. I've heard that if you use 30-40% of what PS is capable of doing....then you are pretty proficient with it. I'd say that's true for a couple reasons. 1. There's a TON of good stuff in PS to use and, 2. There's a TON MORE of crap that you shouldn't use. For one example....IMHO...the magic wand is a worthless tool. It's quick, but NOT accurate. There are better ways to make a selection that offer way more opportunities with better results.

Anyway...I'm running on too much. Let me know when you need help. I'm happy to try to help.

Nice Christmas Present. :D

Photoshop is lots of fun....takes a while to get used to.

As Fender66 said....Scott Kelby has some really good stuff out there for Photoshop tutorials and tips. I'm hoping Santa will be bringing me some of the books he recommends.

What do you do for a living that you use PS? If you don't mind me asking.

Don't mind you asking at all.

I'm Director of Photography (fancy name for a one man show) for an Engineering Company. "Hunter Engineering"

My studio is mine...all to myself. Big enough to get several cars into it, and just outside my studio (still inside the main building) is an area that I often get Big Rig Trucks in for photos. When I'm not behind the camera, I'm using Photoshop to clean up all the images for brochures, trade show prints, print ads, etc..

If you are interested in seeing some of my work, you can go to our website at: https://www.hunter.com

Of course, the web guys have altered most of these for "web use", but you can get an idea of what I've been doing for the past 13 years.

Nice thanks for sharing!

I wish I could find a job doing some kind of photography work one day. I'm going to school for it now.

I hope and pray that for you, the job doesn't ruin the fun in the hobby. It's not often that I want to come home and continue taking pictures. I used to do it all the time, but not so much in the past 10 years....and I've been making my living behind the camera since 1988. It's been fun and I love what I do, but I don't do it for fun much anymore.

OOOO Hunter....they make great alignment machines. I always use shops that have Hunter machines to get alignments on my cars. =D>

Thanks.....you're helping my profit sharing. :D

I'm always amazed by what my wife can do with her PS program. She was head designer/photographer for synergis technologies for 3 years, then on to being one of the lead graphic designer's for the pioneer newspaper, and now runs her own business. Her last gig was doing the corporate identity and buisness logo's for the new Gun Lake Casino's gaming commision. She also keeps pretty busy with doing graduation announcements, senior photo's, wedding invitations, newsletters, company brochures, etc.

myself...I can't even understand all the multiple layers stuff, let alone work with the program.
