I think I have an eye for cool shots, but don't really have the equipment, or knowledge to take truly good pictures.

Any real quick references for reading, and inexpensive equipment?

When I want to compare digital cameras, I always to go https://www.dpreview.com. I've probably sent hundreds of people there. In one of the pulldown menus is a "compare". You can put several cameras side by side and, well, compare them.
