The D40 is a good camera... We have a friend of ours at church and a neighbor who both have this one and they like it a lot. It's a little heavy but pictures are crisp and clear. I have nothing negative to say about Nikon as they are good camera's. We chose Canon as this is what I had grew up using. The D30 we have has been a great one. We've had it the longest of the two and it does a great job.... it's lite for a DSLR and has a built in (pop-up) flash. This comes in handy when you are going on trips and don't feel like lugging around the camera suitcase with all the extras in it. 
Pick a lense or two, throw them in the back-pack and take off. Pictures on both cameras are sharp and clear. I've included a link below which is very helpful in comparing the different camera makes and models and their different features. Check it out and see what you think.
