20 horse Johnson - no reverse

Got my 20 running and doesn't seem to go into reverse. As I shift with motor off seems to go into reverse but will not when running. Is it out of adjustment or is it a deeper problem?

Have you had lower unit off?If so maybe shift shaft wasn't lined up properly.Did it work before :?:

I replaced the impellor before I ever got it started, maybe something out of adjustment? I replaced linkage like original , I thought. Hopefully, it nothing more.

Remove the two screws on the side of the engine that gives you access to the shift rod. Re-install the lower shift rod into the pilot hole until you see the detent in the rod line up with the screw hole. Re-install the screw and do not over tighten. While the cover is still off move the shift lever through the gears and make sure you have both. You may have to move the prop to allow one or the other gear to engage fully.
