Im new to this site I have been reading the forms here for several months now. I just got a 14 foot v bottom john boat with a 1967 johnson 20 hp motor . I want to replace the gasket for the gear case. Why ,the boat has sat for 3 years outside. Now I have it but I have not been able to find the gasket needed. If i buy a roll of gasket material what does it need to be, cork, fiber, compressed. I dont know and would like some help . :?:

Gooddog, glad to hear about your new boat. I have a 1966 Johnson 20 HP, which is almost the same if not identical to the '67. The gasket which I think you are refering to has no identifiable part number according to the parts catalog. Try southcentral outboards or marineengine.com, they often have parts for the old motors. As far as your question about material, I cannot answer that. Good luck in your search gooddog.

Ictalurus, Thanks for the help. And yes that is the right part. I will have to go look at those sites

If you are referring the spaghetti cord that seals the upper lower half of the gear, then here is ebay link to a guy that sells it individually real cheap. I have bought from him and he is honest. Buy extra pieces for the future or in case you mess up. (It is a common spaghetti cord for unit seals for 50 60 and 70's motors (Johnson/Evinrude)

Here is a link for the sealant that you will need in addition to the spaghetti cord. This is the stuff recommend to seal older Johnson/Evinrude motors. It works real good. (The price is reasonable and can used multiple times)

Here is a you tube video of how to do the job. It is not your exact motor but it gives a very good example and procedure of what to do.
