I have a 1968 johnson 20hp tiller. When I bought it the guy said the kill switch didn't work but all it needed was a new push button momentary switch. It has a parts store push button. I hooked up a brand new one an it does not kill the engine. I took it back an got a different one thinking it was the switch but no luck, same thing. What gives? There's only 2 wires and I put them on the same way they came off. Does it take a special switch?

I don't have an answer for you but is it a kill switch or a dead-man switch?

As for a special switch, No. All it needs is a normally open switch that closes as you press it. On my motor it grounds out the spark to the plugs. You apparently have a wire disconnected on one of the wires going to the switch.

The reason some kill switches have 4 post are for normally closed or normally open.

I would check to make sure one of your wires isn't broken.

Most kill switches ground the points.
