When I change the lower unit oil on my motor the owner's manual says to torque the oil level plug and oil drain screw to 6.6 foot pounds. I don't have a torque wrench and don't have a clue what 6.6 foot pounds feels like. Of course I want to get it tight enough to keep water out but not so tight that I wind up it screwing it up. Do I just need to go hand tight with a big screwdriver or do I need to go out and buy a torque wrench?

Yep, it is hard to be exact but I sort of use body mass as my guage. Now I'm not a big guy so this probably won't work for everyone. If I "snug" something, I use my wrist to tighten it.

Get a hand impact tool with a common screw driver bit to fit those screws. Makes life a whole lot easier. If you're not sure, just a light tap after you snug them down. You'll never strip the head out. I use them to get out oil drain screws that've been damaged.
