87 Mercury 45hp classic 50 motor was on boat but no gas can or hose. Does this motor take the old metal pressurized can or can I use new plastic cans from walmart or bass pro ?

I'm not sure about this, but I think you'll be fine with the can from WalMart. I don't think 1987 is old enough to require the pressurized tanks.
Someone else though will be able to tell you for sure.

I don't think Merc ran pressurized tanks.I have a 1956 & it isn't.
You'll be good with any tank,single line.
