It's about time for me to check and/or replace the spark plugs on my 25-hp Yamaha. The owner's manual says to torque them to 18.4 ft-lbs but I don't have a torque wrench and hate to buy one for something I'll only do occasionally. I know the problems with cranking the spark plugs down too tight but can I just install them with a socket wrench or do I really need to do the torque wrench thing?

I've never used one for plugs.
Car,truck,chainsaw,mowers etc.,never.
Maybe I should though?

I think if you just get them tight

I just snug them and give about a quarter turn - use a short handled ratchet so you do not get that much torque

Hand/wrench tighten until they seat, then turn 1/4" turn more. This is one place you dont need to muscle them.

Harbor Freight has torque wrenches for $12 right now if you really want one. I agree with everyone else, snug then 1/4 turn. I made the mistake of over tightening one on an old outboard I had when I was younger. Had to get a helicoil put in to fix it.
