Problem with old merc gears

So I had to replace the impeller on my old merc this weekend. I was told its a 9.8hp when I bought it but the motor seems kind of small to be that.. im guessing its a 7.5? The serial number starts with 703 and I checked around online and cant seem to find any info on the motor. Anyways, so I replaced the impeller successfully, but now I cant get my engine out of reverse. It seems to be jammed.. so matter what I do it wont budge and im worried im going to break something if I force it into neutral. Anyone have any insight on this?

Sounds like maybe the shifter was moved & the shift splines are not in the right place when put back together. :?:
