I am looking at purchasing an 1973 Johnson 18 HP later this week. I mwas wondering how I may increase the power without major engine work. Please advise.

You can replace the carb with one from a 25hp of around the same vintage.

this is not exactly increasing the HP, but you can optimize your motor's performance by getting the best prop for your boat. not sure though if this is an option for vintage motors.

Yes, you can do that as well. Michigan wheel had some very nice two blade bronze or brass propellers that definitely helped performance for both the spline drive and the pin drive lower units.
