I have a 1988 Merc. 60 HP, it was running sept. of 2010 a Mechanic got it running, now all it does is hum at the starter, I was told to tap on the starter untill it starts or turns over, will this hurt the starter. All the power trim does is humms when trying to raise and lower the motor. Thank You Guys for all of your advise and help in advance.

I am no mechanic...but it sounds like a low battery or a bad connection if both items display those symptoms. Rich

Thank You guys for the advise, All i did was tap on the 60 hp starter and on the motor for the trim and they both started to work. the mech. said because they had sit so long they kind of froze up. Thank You guys again for the advise. Dave
