So I'm still working on the electric start change over, and just kind of messing with things when I remembered how the throttle control seemed a bit slow responding... I changed the steering handle gear and shaft assembly a few years ago and it's still good...The inner shaft and gearing seems to be loose at both ends... How do I remove these gears and the shaft ? According to the parts catalog, it looks like everything just slides together and I have to take the steering handle off to get to the front gear and then the vertical control shaft and gear off to get the rear gear off. I'll try to post some pics...

All the gears seem to be meshed correctly, they're both loose to the shaft...
Is there any way to tighten this ? Doesn't seem so according to the parts diagram

Thanks again, Pappy ! I think I'll wait awhile to get to that.... I've got a feeling the shaft ends are probably worn out and a better shaft will be hard to find...
