HELP 87 Johnson 20 broken bolt

Last time we took the little Valco on a test flight...the tiller was pretty loose...today. in an attempt to "snug this up"...i tightened a 9/16" nut directly behind/ABOVE the lift handle, but no change in feel...ONLY then did i find the slotted screw that IS the friction adjustment..made small adjustment and tiller feels much better
while bent over the transom doing this...i see that my earlier attempt broke off the stud under the 9/16 nut...looking for a microfiche pic, but can anyone tell me if this is a critical component???

looks like it the front upper motor mount front stud...how tough to get it out???

The exhaust housing has to at least come loose from the steering bracket. The gearcase has to come off to start with and then the lower mounts have to be freed as well. then the powerhead and midsection can be seperated and the mount replaced.

Sounds spooky for a newbie...furthest I've gone is replacing the impeller on a 9.8 Merc 110....any special tools/skills needed??
