drive shaft seal. how to pull with out puller.??????

Ok well I found out where the needle bearings were from. the drive shaft bearing in the upper part of the lower unit...:D

But there is a brass seal and a rubber bushing on top of that bearing. In my manual it says i need a bearing puller special tool #380655
and a bushing remover tool. #304514


How do i pull this seal without a puller? I have tried prying it up with a screwdriver but the soft brass is bending.

any ideas?

Do you have the drive shaft removed?

If so, you might be able to use a large anchor bolt, go ahead and pre-bend the tabs so they fit tight when you put the bolt through the bushing. Then draw it up until the tabs expand so that the bolt cannot be pulled out. THe anchor bolt with the washer will give you something to pry on. A slide hammer might also work, possibly by using a bolt coupler from the anchor bolt to the threads on the slide hammer.
 
Its actually the drive shaft bearing that i need out. i was able to get the brass seal out. all of the needle bearings have fallen out of it.

this is really in there and theres no real lip on it anywhere to drive the bearing out.
 
Yes a slide hammer might help if i can get it to grab on the bearing.
Thanks for the idea.
Someone on iboats mentioned heating the aluminum housing to get it to expand. But I am concerned that might warp the housing.

Like PSG-1 stated, a slide hammer would work too.


Just be careful not to damage the walls.
