What to use between motor clamps and transom

Hi folks,

I am curious as to what i should put between the motor clamps and the Transom in order to reduce the spread the force that is added by the clamps. I have heard some use wood and others use plates that are adhered with epoxy or screwed in. I really do not want to put any holes in my transom. Anyone have any suggestions?

My boat has a thin aluminum plate where the clamps hit.
