***UPDATED!! Motor Purchased! Scroll down a couple post to see the photo's***

I am pretty sure I am going to purchase this motor tomorrow, if he still has it for sale. Here is the listing:

https://elmira.craigslist.org/boa/2993925048.html

I have a 1958 Johnson 35hp outboard (see sig), and at the very least, I figured I could use this motor for parts. Maybe if I am lucky, I will get them both running, then just sell whichever one I don't want to keep.

Thoughts?

Shoot....for $75, if you get it running it's worth having just to have. I'd go for it unless there's something expensive wrong with it when you go see it.

Yea, I think it makes sense. I have never actually seen my 58' Johnson run, so since its almost an identical motor it would make sense even as a part motor.

I figure worst-case scenario--i part it with my current motor to make 1 good running motor, then part-out the rest and break even.

Best case scenario, I get both running good, and sell which ever one I don't want to keep for a profit.

UPDATE--MOTOR PURCHASED!

So I went looking at this motor as a parts motor for my 1958 Johnson Seahorse (see sig). However when I got there, and start inspecting this thing--it appears to be in good--real good shape, and not to mention, he had a lot of accessories for it.

He was just looking to unload the motor and most of the accessories on the boat. I ended up with this beauty of a motor, plus the pressurized gas tank (in decent shape), plus the shift/acceleration controls, plus a steering wheel with teleflex cable system. But the kicker of the whole deal is that this motor has the electric start, and he gave me everything to just plug it in and go, including the battery!

She is not as pretty as my Johnson, but I cannot pass up the electric start option! So long as I can get her running good, she will be whats going on my frankintin

Motor looks super clean. This is exactly how it looked when I picked it up.

That says "25532"... I believe that means she's a Lark!

Hopefully a new paint job and some graphics is the most amount of work she'll need!

Unfortunately, I didnt see it run, and no way to check compression, so it still may be a parts motor--but I still think I got my moneys worth!

Ohh yea, he asked $75 for it all... I gave him $100 as I thought it was just such a killer deal. We both left happy, and that's what it's all about!

Hopefully you will have a good engine to put back into service. Remember that it is not inexpensive to do this properly, however your initial cost is so low it should be easily worth it. You will need to check and update the ignition components if this hasnt been done. Update the water pump and check the gearcase for leaks and reseal as necessary. Go through the carb and install a new kit while there.
Am hoping you will repaint the engine in the original 1958 color scheme which was really nice looking. Proper water slide or newer vinyl decals are also available.
This engine, as with your 1958 Johnson, has to be run on no less than 24:1 fuel/oil mixture to give you a long service life. Anything less and you will have slow but continually degrading running characteristics and eventually junk on your transom. Good luck with your engine and nice find !
