I'm in process of rebuilding my new (to me) 1970 Johnson 9.5horse. I got a carb kit, but I'm unsure that I know where every piece goes. My plan was to clean and soak, then take many detailed pictures to aid in reassembly, then just disassemble it, replacing parts when they have a match in the rebuild kit. Is this a legitimate method, or asking for trouble?

My questions would be:
1. besides the obvious float and gaskets, which parts should I assume will be included in the kit?

Also any specific instructions to my carb would be great, I know there is a manual floating around this site that I would love to have. I do promise to post my pictures and discoveries so that I'm the last to take on this carb blindly.

Here is the schematic:
https://www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1970&hp=9.5&model=9R70C&manufacturer=Johnson&section=Carburetor+Group

and here is the kit I have:

Thanks A lot for any help at all! -Andrew

Overwhelming response!

well the rebuild went fine, carb comes off with 5 straight edge screws, over up with 4 of same. Float was quite deteriorated. After replacing float, turn upside down and gently bend bracket of float until it sits parallell with the float body it's mounted to. Low speed needle needs to be removed and replaced, to put back tighten to seat then back out 1 1/2 turns, fine tune from there. blow out/ verify cleanliness of passages, including the high spped orifice, right beneath the float bowl. You can see it's status without removing it with a light.

I do need a new fuel pump, unfortunately the one made for this motor is $90! I'm going to try the part intended for the next generation 9.9 motors as it's $30. They do the same job, so I am going to attempt it, any experience here?

Do not think the next Gen 9.9 fuel pump will work or fit on the 9.5's. I would rebuild the old one

the manual says it is not rebuildable, and parts are not available. Would you expect a diaphram from another pump to work? Thanks!

Sierra #18-7823 is what I used on my 1965 Johnson 9.5. Not sure why it wouldn't work on your 1970 model.
Napa,West marine, ect sells them as well as online. Less then 20 bucks.

Check out this site https://www.leeroysramblings.com/Rebuilding_fuelpump.htm
It has the instructions that come with the OEM kits, The Sierra kit doesn't have them. The only tricky part is the small spring inside the pump. Just be careful when you pull yours apart and you'll see where it goes. If it does go flying the kit comes with a new one and the instructions tell you where to put it depending on where the outlet nipple is facing. So before you pull yours off the motor note where the inlet and outlet face. It matters when going back together...

Always buy OEM if you can.... and I read on vintageoutboard.com that 18-7823 will not fit motors prior to 1981? I usually can find any part for a johnson motor and I have looked on several sites and cannot seem to get a reference to what rebuild kit you exactly need?

Thanks guys! I though I was going to have quite a project on my hands. Using the last 2 posts I was able to find this:
https://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=OMC0393088&ptype=&Engine=&Model=

and I feel that I will be able to rebuild it thanks to the great directions above. Any reason this wouldn't work? Shapes look to match up as far as I can tell without seeing it.

Thanks a Lot! -Andrew
