Hey everyone,

I am kind of freaking out because I cannot find a part for my motor. Last time I had my boat on the water it seemed like my motor had zero power. It is a 1980 mercury 9.8, so it never had a lot of power, but I could tell something was wrong. So I took it to the local marina, and even though it starts first pull every time, only one cylinder is firing up. So he said I need to find an ignition module to replace the bad one, but mercury doesn't make it anymore and I cannot find it online anywhere, everything I've been able to find says that it is obsolete.

Does anyone know where I could find an ignition module? The part number is 336-4516A2?

Any help is appreciated...thanks so much.

It isn't on ebay now, I found it at Twin City Outboard, but I'm trying to decide if I should really put this much money into it, they want $250 for it, but whenever Mercury sold the part they only sold it for $132...so I don't know what to do.

Is this not it?

It may be time to upgrade. The $250 coil won't last forever, and it'll only get more expensive with time. Maybe find an omc motor that is still supported parts-wise.

Try here https://www.fergusonpoolemarine.com/home.html I have found parts for my 1970 20 hp there.

Here's another place recommended by my Mercury dealer https://www.seawaymarine.com/

one cylinder not firing , hmmm..... I had a spark plug wire giving me a hard time not long ago. Maybe try swapping them and seeing if the problem moves to the other piston. Or if you have a meter check the ohms on the wire, it should be 0.0 on Evinrude I guess it would be the same on a Merc.

I have a CDI with coils from a 1980s 9.8 that I can't read the part number on, if you could post a photo of the CDI showing the wiring I'll let you know if it might be a possibility.

you can get after market electronics for it at wulffe marine, their the cheapest I have found for new stuff. the one the guy above has should be fine as the 80s are pretty much the same up to 20hp. 7.5 9.8 and the 20. hope that helps.
