I've been looking for a cheap motor for my tin boat. I found one for $150 but I don't know anything about motors. It's only a 5hp so I'd sell it once I can afford a 25hp motor for my 14' tin boat. It runs but I don't know anything else about it. What should I ask him before I buy it?

ask when the impeller was last done. also if the lower unit was ever serviced.

buy a cheap compression tester. test the motor warm and make sure the two cylinders are with in 10%. if it runs make sure water is coming out of the pee hole. check low idle to wot. when the motor is running place your hand around the motor and make sure there is no hot spots.
hope this helps

Ask him to start it, if it does, it's well worth the money. Starting ensures carb, ignition, and compression are okay. My own personal rule is to replace impeller and gear lube on any used motor, just for safety, then carb, plugs and coils as needed.

In a perfect world you'de have a compression tester, my guess would be 60 PSI for this motor. If compression tests OK, buy it and figure out what it needs to run.

Good luck.
