Acquired a 1986 Evinrude 15hp outboard from and friend and my first boat, ive never operated an outboard motor before and was wondering if someone could explain what the symbols on the throttle grip represent? theres a dot with a arrow on either side and then two round swirl marks...im clueless hah

Throttle is pretty simple. Rotate one direction to give it more gas or wide open, rotate the other direction to give less gas or idle. The swirls you're describing sound like symbols to indicate you rotate it in each direction. Some throttle setups have a kill button located in the end of the grip, not sure if yours does or not.
