Size of motor can I use

I bought a semi v-hull 16' and just found out it was a lone star. The data plate is missing and the owner said he had a 40 hp on it, but didn't see it for myself because the motor was gone. How do I figure out what I can go with without tearing the transome right off the boat? I am replacing the wood transom from top to bottom even though it only had wood from top to mid way down. I think this will give it move support. Is there a site I can go to because Lone Star went out in the later 60's... [-o<
