Hey could anyone PLZ post a pic of your 1956 Johnson 10 hp faceplate. I am getting ready to paint and I gotta get a picture of it before i do something to mess it up. For one thing, i need to figure out what knobs to put on, what the decals look like, color etc. The 1957 is different.

thanks so much jd

THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!!!!!!

Now the big question. How come some pics show a round upper knob and some pics show a needle, like yours?? I have not seen the actual faceplate til now, thank you, but the ones I have seen from the side kinda looked round. Which is why I am confused and why I pleaded to see a full face on faceplate.

Any thoughts???

THANK YOU THANK YOU

I would not have a clue unless you were looking a a picture of a Canadian model which if I recall correctly did not have Sea Horse in script.

Based on the overall condition of the motor in the image, which I sold, I believe it was 100% original. It was a well cared for cream puff. It was too big for the restricted lakes I fish so I sold it.

seriously, 10 hp is too much? is that typical? how much will they let you have?

i did get a picture of the 1956 decals from the internet somewhere, so i am ok in that department. just don't know why some MAY have had round knobs. they were hard to see from the side view. thanks again so much.

is there anyway to tell if it was a canadian or us motor?
i think that is why we are seeing 2 versions.

Could be they replaced the lever style knob with a round one. Or painted the older motors the newer colors. Hard to tell.

One lake is 5 max and the other is 3.5. Neither are are that large.

This link will tell you what the model numbers mean: https://www.ehow.com/how_7580408_read-johnson-outboard-model-numbers.html

Not sure if it goes that far back cause the the one I posted was a QD-17.

I looked though a PDF service manual I have and could not find a face plate image.

hi I am back. I didn't find an engine no. . the link talks about engine no.s, serial no.s and part numbers. i do not understand where to look, however,

on the start handle side of the motor was a metal tag that read model no. QD-17 and serial no. 1364383
Waukegan, IL USA

I could not find any numbers on the engine preceded by any letters.

so I assume it was made here and therefore should have a needle knob for the upper mixture knob, NOT a round one.

Now I have a new problem, I have no water coming out the back when running it in the bucket, in neutral or forward, and plenty of blue smoke,

thats the water pump, right? it was working fine 10 years ago.

Definitely replace the impeller. I recently got a QD-16 into fine running condition and that was one of the must-do replacements.
You also might check into replacing coils, condensers, and a carb rebuild.

I think when you get that thing running you'll be real happy.

Very nice looking motors in my opinion.
