Hey, I have a 1995 Nissan 40hp short shaft tiller that won't go into reverse. When I go to put it in reverse there is a grinding/slipping noise coming from lower unit. Also it seems to not have enough umph when going in forward. From what I have read online it seems to be the "Clutch Dog"? Anyone have any other ideas, how hard is it to replace, anything else that I should repalce while I am in there, and any tips on doing the work or what to look for? Thanks in advance for any help!

You won't know to you get in there. That will be the cheapest you will probably get out. It could be worse such as pinion gear also. I wouldn't go in there without replacing seals also.

Get everything cleaned up super clean so you can check the bearings and races and make sure that no metal shavings haven't scarred them.
