Ok starting a new thread

Well I mounted a 1973 65 hp Johnson to a 1652 Lowe Roughneck Side Console. I ran into an issue. The outboard came with controls but the cables are way too long. Also The controls don't have a trim switch on the handle. So I have come to several solutions but I don't know what would be best.

Convert the Mercury Controls (2006) that I have to work with the 1973 Johnson. (Don't know if this is possible)
Buy new controls and cables with a trim switch integrated into the lever arm.
Buy new cables of the right length to work with johnson control box and get the teleflex dual trim switch to run the power tilt and jack plate.

Does the 1973 65 HP Johnson even have power tilt and trim? If it does, hooking up a tilt trim switch is pretty easy. I would do that and just buy new throttle control cables.

It does I can operate them by running the bare leads to the battery posts. I am leaning towards getting the duel power trim switches from teleflex. Then buying 9 foot cables.

That sounds like a plan,

Teleflex makes pretty good stuff. The tilt trim motors draw a punch of amps so make sure you use heavy enough gauge wire and if the Teleflex switch doesn't come with a relay I would get one and wire it in.

It seems to be the exact same set up as the jack plate... 3 wire electric motor. I wonder where would be a good place to mount the relays.

Just some place that they will have minimal exposure to the elements. If you're console is not to far from the motor maybe underneath it, just make sure nice thick gauge wire.

Pull the cowling off and look on the engine block. Some older engines had their trim relays mounted on the engine block. As far as converting the Merc Console over that would be a nightmare to do if it could be done at all. Better off to buy new control cables of the right length and use a separate trim switch to operate your tilt/trim with.

You'll want the relays closer to the trim motor. This way the "high current" circuit will be shorter.

Pretty sure (unless the mercury controls are universal, like morse) one pulls and the other pushes for throttle. If it's a universal control you should be able to reverse the pivot point inside the control to make it work, but then you will still need to get new cables (ends).

Easiest and cheapest method is to get the new cables. Those older ones are really cheap.

Hey I bought new cables and an adapter kit. I hope that I got the right ones. I dont seem to have the locking piece that goes on the throttle cable so I bought the connection kit. Its OEM controls and 1973 Johnson 65 HP outboard.

There was a transom mounted trim relay box that came with engines (of that era) that were shipped with the old external Power Trim.
Easiest way for you to do this is locate one of those. Good chance a dealer that has been in business for a long time will have one laying around.

I ended up just making my own harness and connected it to a pt-2000.
