Looking at an 30hp 2003 short shaft pull start. How are the late model johnsons? Experiences good or bad?

I started out with that motor(jet) on a riveted 1648 jon, worked fine with one, a little slow to plane with two and gear. It has about 6 more cubic inches than the 24ci Yamaha 25hp and uses the medium jet pump instead of the small.

That's exactly what I'm looking at! Its a jet, the shop took it as a trade in. I'm running a real light load 16' x51" 200lb hull, should run well guys are happy with 25/20 on this hull. What are some things I should check on the motor and pump? Im aware of the compression.

Since it's a pull start, I would want to start it cold it a test tank, listen for any unusual noises. Check the jet pump for cracks or welded repairs. Sounds like a good match for your new boat.

Thanks, I'll do just that. Was it a pretty dependable motor? Good to hear its a better fit than the yamaha, I just had one sold out from under me than found this one.

It's a mini-beast, keep the carb spotless so it never runs lean, change the water impeller every other season, and use a quality oil.
