I found an 87-89 9.9 2 stroke Tohatsu for $550.
He says it's pull start and electric. He says forward and reverse work great. However, it's missing it's cowling. Can you all tell me if this is a good deal? Will not having a cowling be a factor?

If I do buy it, is there a way to cover it without paying out the butt for an exact replacement cowl?

Thanks guys

No, its not a good deal IMO.

Tohatsus from that era are freaky first-attempts. For that kind of money, I would look for something a little more mainstream and in great shape. You will be glad you did first time you need a part.

The last thing you want is to spend your resources on that, only to have a nice Evinrude or Mercury come your way next week...now you spent your money.

Keep your 450 handy and shop around a little. Wait for something really nice.

I am always in the minority...and usually wrong.

Sounds like a good idea to me, but I am simply sumdumguy.

I found a 5hp Briggs & Stratton air cooled. Around 10 years old. "Runs great", he says. What's a good price?

IMO I would take it for free, maybe up to $50. But that's just me, I hate those lawnmower outboards.

Here's a nice motor.... $150 (talk about parts availability for ancient outboards and pump upgrades and then flash him a franklin). 50-100 bucks investment and you will have a really cool motor - classic. Super easy to work on and parts and advice are readily available.

That motor merc 5hp sounds better than the others. I would offer him $400, and wouldn't pay more than $440 The 9.9 would be a good choice too. Those motors are not that heavy.

I sold my 5 HP Merc for $500, I can't remember the year but it was newer that 2003; but not by much I think.
