I just got a 1966 Starcraft Sea Scamp with a 7.5 hp Ted Williams motor. The motor has spark and compression but won't start. I have a couple questions about it. I see the motor is air cooled. Is it okay to run the motor out of water? Does the drive section need water in some way to cool it? Is the motor a 2 stroke that needs oil and gas mixed?

Squirt some mix (when you find out the correct ratio - or guess heavy and go 24:1) down the throat of the cab and see if you can make the motor pop.

The motor is a 2-stroke.

Depending on the motor, I am not familiar, there were some made that were truly air-cooled and others that were air-cooled with water cooled exhaust and some that have 2 water impellers.

Is the motor also a '66?

I have an old Clinton 2.5 total air cooled..... thing gets very hot so I tend to run it in water for S&G's.

I am able to get the motor to start and run briefly. When I push the pump on the tank gas comes out the connection to the engine. It will then run for 2-5 seconds and die. Someone told me that I could replace the o-rings on the connector and that may fix the issue. Any idea where I can find these?

I found the connector and coupling on Sears parts direct. Is the connector or the coupling more likely to have the leak. The coupling costs $26.69 while the connector costs $13.49.

Here is a video of it running.

definitely, you could even run the line from the tank directly to the fuel pump (does it have a fuel pump???) to eliminate the connector issue.
If the motor then runs good and draws fuel you'll know where the issue is located.

If the motor does have a fuel pump and you still have issue hook the hose directly to the carb, elevate the fuel tank and gravity feed fuel into the motor and see if it will run.

I kenna see the video as I am at work.....will take a look later.

I would bypass everything and hook the fuel tank directly to the carb. Elevate the tank, so as to gravity feed fuel, and I am betting it will run.

I will do that tonight. I'm hoping to go out tomorrow with the boat. I'll use the trolling motor if I don't get the actual motor working.

I did that yesterday. I put the tank up high and ran a hose directly to the carb inlet. The engine ran well like that. Low or high rpm were both working. The problem now is that the nipple that goes into the carb does not seat tightly. It is a tube the size of a ballpoint pen tip. The part is not available new on searsparts direct. I'm wondering if I should use a bit of fuel safe expoxy and attempt to glue it in. I'm not sure how that would work though since there is not a lot of room to put expoxy around the fitting. Is there a fuel safe glue I could use? A diagram of the fitting and the piece it is mounted to is attached.

Keithert, do you have a picture of your sea scamp? I'm trying to figure out what year sea scamp I just bought.

I'll try to get a pic of it. What I really need help with tonight is finding the drain and fill bolts for the lower drive. There is a plate with 2 screws holding it about a foot up the motor. Behind the plate is an adjusting screw. I'm not sure what that is for.

Can someone tell me where the lube drain and fill is?
