When I bought my 1975 Evinrude 25HP there was a bail (photo below) that was in the outer holes on the motor transom clamp. Its purpose was to hold the motor in a tilted position, using the tilt lock. When not in use it just hung under the transom bracket. I removed it while trying to fix a trim problem and I broke it. Before I broke it both ends looked like the right end. It is 3/8" aluminum rod and it looks like I am going have to make one, as no parts diagram I have found shows it. Has anyone seen one on a motor before?

I've seen them on smaller outboards in the past, but I honestly don't think I ever have on anything bigger than a 9.9hp.

I have seen someething this part as a flat bar bent into a C shape on my evinrude 1994 15 hp. Maybe the round bar you have was someone's self-made fix.
In case you haven't seen this evinrude parts diagram database, it's a good one.

From the diagram for 1975 25 HP (under Exhaust Housing category) it looks like maybe the reverse locking lever part #71?

Thanks Ken - that is the same diagram I have found on many sites.
Part 71 & 74 form the clamp that locks on Part #24 to stop the motor from tilting when put into reverse.
The same two parts lock on the bail when it is rotated up to lock the motor in a tilted position.

The part you are looking at is an aftermarket part.
The two small tangs at the open ends went into the tilt holes. The "bail" part was then swung up and into position and the engine lowered onto it. Used mainly for an early version of shallow water drive or just for trailering with the engine tilted up some. I have a brand new one somewhere around here still in the package!

Thanks - I did not know that.

Exactly right. It was handy too.

If you ever come across it let me know. I would like to have the manufacturer's name if possible.

You guys really got my curiosity up so I started googling around!

Is it this...

Beware the ebay title says HTL-0020 but the tag in the photo says HTL-0010.

browse around the trmarine catalog; they even have universal fit models.

I googled that thing for a long time but never tried a Half Tilt Lock.
I tried shallow water bail, shallow water attachment and more.
Thanks !! I think I will get the adjustable one offered on the website.

Yes- it installs in the same holes as the tilt adjustment rod. Mine was in the rear-most hole. I removed it trying to eliminate a problem I had and wanted to put the tilt rod in the last hole. To use it you tilt the motor all the way up, rotate the bail so when the motor is lowered the bracket rests on the bail instead of the rod. Then you engage the tilt lock up front under the motor and the motor is locked in the half-tilt position. To un-engage it you put the tilt lock in the unlock position and lift the motor slightly and the bail will fall straight down and out of the way. I used for trailering (yes I know some say not to). Many years ago my 9.9 Merc had a lever on the side you could hold and lower the motor and get the same half-tilt but it was shallow water use and the tilt was much less than my Evinrude.

I know this is an older thread but I finally got off my dead butt and ordered the part from TR Marine. It came in and it is perfect. Thanks Ken for the point.
