I bought my first real boat this weekend. A 1648 War Eagle with a 1994 40hp Mariner, 4 cylinder, 2 stroke. I am in a huge learning curve when it comes to boats and outboards. I will very likely have lots of questions, so please bare with me. I have been looking online for an owner's manual and can't find anything. The only thing I can find is a service manual that covers motors from 1990-2000 from 2hp - 275hp. Does anyone know of anything more specific to my motor out there? Thanks.

Mercury and Mariner motors in this age are the same. I've found a couple on Ebay:

You may want to look at the Mercury manuals too.

Good luck!

You say they are the same, does that mean that the higher hp models are just bigger versions of the smaller ones?

I think he is saying that a 40 hp mercury or 40 hp mariner are the same. Not that all the different hp outboards are the same which of course is not true. So try to find a 40 hp mercury manual. My service manual (which I got online for free) and is a clymer covers many different models of johnson and evinrude. Factory would be better.

Look for a genuine Factory MERCURY/MARINER service manual. The Seloc, Clymer, and Haynes manuals are OK in a pinch.
